Join us on our adventure as we transform an ordinary van into a cozy camper. The first steps were… well, let’s just say, not without challenges!
Our starting point was a three-year-old Caddy Maxi, once a company vehicle for an electronics company. When we first saw it, we thought, “Man, this is going to be a lot of work!” Sure, we didn’t choose a luxury camper model; we opted for a real DIY conversion. But hey, nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?
So there we were, facing this empty van, wondering if we might have bitten off more than we could chew. But one thing was clear: giving up was not an option. So, we unpacked our tools and got to work.
The first step was getting rid of everything that didn’t belong there. And that was pretty much everything! The floor panel was the first candidate. Man, was it glued down! Simply unscrewing wouldn’t cut it. We had to carefully lift the floor and cut the darn glue with a bread knife and utility knife. You’ve got to be resourceful, folks!
After the floor was out, we moved on to the side and ceiling panels. Our screwdrivers came in handy. It was exhausting, but we had a lot of fun.
Finally, we tackled the load compartment lining. That was perhaps the trickiest part. But hey, we were no longer beginners. With a few curses here and there, we eventually detached it. The camper was now empty. Seriously empty. But that’s exactly what we wanted. We had made room for our ideas.
After this exhausting day, we treated ourselves to a break. A cold beer and a look at our empty yet promising camper. We knew there was a lot of work ahead, but we were full of excitement for what was to come.
